Upcoming Senate Hearing on State Police Municipal Coverage
There are currently 1,703 municipalities in Pennsylvania served by the State Police (PSP) on a full-time or part-time basis in lieu of a local police force. State law guarantees PSP municipal coverage in the absence of a local police force.
On Tuesday, October 17 at 11:00 a.m. the Senate Appropriations Committee will conduct a public hearing to examine the fiscal aspects of PSP municipal coverage and discuss long-term solutions to ensure that every municipality in the Commonwealth continues to have adequate police coverage.
I’m hosting an AARP Driver Safety Program 4-Hour Refresher Course on Tuesday, October 24 at Challenges—Options in Aging in New Castle. Registration required. See flier for more information.
Real ID Update
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced a REAL ID enforcement grace period through January 22, 2018. As a result, Pennsylvania residents will not have access issues when entering federal facilities through that date.
The enforcement grace period applies only to entrance to federal facilities. Pennsylvanians flying commercial will not be required to show a REAL ID until October 1, 2020.
PennDOT continues to implement the federal REAL-ID requirements; the department estimates driver licenses and identification cards will be available at the customer’s option in March 2019. This will allow ample time for customers who want a REAL ID product to get one before the final DHS effective date of October 1, 2020.
Last week, I was in Zelienople Borough with state & local officials to tour ongoing downtown renovations & discuss plans for the future.
