Anglers Warned not to Eat Fish from Shenango River

The Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture, Environmental Protection, Health, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced a “DO NOT EAT” advisory for all fish species caught in the Shenango River in Mercer and Lawrence Counties due to extremely high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). The advisory extends to all fish between the Shenango Lake Dam and the mouth of the Shenango River in New Castle, PA.

DEP is currently investigating possible sources of the PCB contamination. Click here for more information.

Look out for “Card Skimmers”

“Card skimmers” are malicious credit/debit card readers that illegally gather data from a card’s magnetic stripe. They’re often attached to a real payment terminal and allow a scammer to steal personal financial and account information. Click here for more information about card skimmers.

The Senate voted to establish a program to provide grants to qualified applicants to develop, implement, and operate a statewide 2-1-1 system. I voted in favor of the measure.

2-1-1 is a regionally-structured system that connects Pennsylvanians in need of health and human services with the appropriate assistance programs provided by government, non-profits, and private organizations. It is maintained and operated by local United Way organizations in their respective counties. It’s estimated that 15% of Pennsylvanians do not currently have access to this resource.

Senate Bill 211 would create a streamlined, more efficient 2-1-1 network that would be available to all Pennsylvanians in need. Click here for more information about 2-1-1.

Notary Law Changes

Changes to the Pennsylvania notary law include a new education requirement for current and new notaries public. The Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts (RULONA) will go into effect on October 26. All current notaries who will be renewing a commission on or after that date must complete a 3-hour notary education course within the six months before they apply for renewal. The requirement also applies to anyone seeking a new commission as a notary. In addition, new notaries will be required to take and pass an examination before receiving their commission. Current notaries will not be subject to the examination requirement unless their commission has expired or lapsed. Click here for more information.

Always a fun time meeting constituents at the Hookstown Fair!
