Scavello Lauds Terrafina Decision to Relocate to Monroe County, Creating 120 New Jobs
Our region received great news this week with the announcement that food manufacturer Terrafina LLC will be relocating its operations from New York City to East Stroudsburg, creating 120 new jobs in Monroe County.
Terrafina will purchase a 72,000-square-foot facility in East Stroudsburg. The project includes the purchase of the building, renovations, and the purchase of equipment, computers and furniture. The company will invest over $4.1 million into the project.
Terrafina received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development for $240,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits to be distributed upon creation of the new jobs and $54,000 in WEDnetPA employee training funding. The company has also been encouraged to apply for a $2,040,000 low-interest loan from the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) to assist with building and equipment costs.
Terrafina was established in 2005 and manufactures a variety of health snack options under its own brands and under private labels. Its core business is blending nuts, dried fruits, and trail mixes.
Strong communities across the 40th Senatorial District require access to good jobs, and a diverse economy that reflects the changing marketplace. We need to keep working to showcase Pennsylvania’s infrastructural potential and location to major markets, streamline regulations, and lower the cost of doing business in Pennsylvania so that employers can continue to operate here, and businesses looking to relocate will bring their jobs here.
Deadline to Apply for Property Tax/Rent Rebates is Dec. 31
The deadline to file the PA-1000 Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program application for 2016 is December 31.
My office would be happy to help you with your application. Since the deadline falls on the holiday weekend, please contact my office by December 28 so it can be filed on time.
The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians 65 or older, widows and widowers age 50 or older, and people with disabilities age 18 or older. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates can boost rebates to $975.
The income limit is $35,000 per year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, but please don’t assume you are not eligible. Half of Social Security income is discounted, and claimants are not disqualified from rebates solely because of Social Security cost-of-living adjustments.
Rebate applications for 2017 will be available in early February 2018.
Pyramid Health to Host Event on Coping with Grief, Stress, Change
Pyramid Health, Inc. will host a Seasons of Recovery event titled “May Your Days be Merry and Bright: How to Cope with Grief, Stress and Change for a Joyous Holiday Season” on December 20 from 6 – 7:30 PM at their Bartonsville Location (3180 Route 611, Suite 19, Bartonsville).

Around the 40th District
Ross Township celebrated the grand opening of their beautiful new building this past weekend. It's wonderful to see the community coming together to support each other and move forward to a new, even brighter chapter for the Township. My sincerest best wishes to the Township leadership and citizens as the new building and beautiful surrounding park land is used moving forward.
It was my pleasure to recognize Lucas Yanchok, the newest Eagle Scout of Troop 41 in Johnsonville. For his Eagle project, Lucas renovated and rebuilt two parking lots and a memorial bench for Faith Lutheran Church. Lucas is very involved in both his troop and the community, where he volunteers for the Portland Food Pantry and recently joined the Mount Bethel Volunteer Fire Department. We wish you the best as you continue your Scouting journey.

Watch Out for “Easy Money” Loans this Holiday Season
Beware of “Easy Money” loans for holiday expenses this season. These loans, often in the form of payday loans or car title loans, range from $100 to $1,000, although some go higher.
Including interest and fees, these loans demand that you pay 300 to 1,000 annual percent rate, which is unlawful in Pennsylvania. Many of these loans are short-term, while some loans take years to repay, often with added, unexpected charges.
The Department of Banking and Securities has a list of warning signs and alternative ideas if you’re in debt or short on cash.
Students Invited to Submit Ideas to Reduce Unsafe Teen Driving
High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors are invited to submit ideas to PennDOT on how to curb unsafe teen driving practices.
The Innovations Challenge asks students to look at technologies and innovative methods -- aside from traditional paid advertising, marketing and social media channels -- that can be developed in the next five to ten years to curb unsafe teen driving practices.
The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2018. Eleven regional winners will be selected and be invited to compete in Harrisburg for the grand championship in April 2018.
2018 PA Wildlife Calendar Sales Support Conservation
You can find striking wildlife photos along with helpful hints for hunting and the outdoors in the 2018 Pennsylvania Wildlife Calendar. In addition, stunning displays of outdoor scenery can be found in photographs from across Pennsylvania captured in the 2018 State Parks Calendar.
Proceeds of all products sold through the Outdoor Shop support the preservation, conservation, and management of Pennsylvania’s wildlife resources and habitats.
Hunters Sharing the Harvest
This hunting season, hunters are reminded of the Hunters Sharing the Harvest program that can take donations of any unwanted meat.
Any extra venison that a hunter is willing to part with will be donated to participating butchers and food banks across the state to feed the less fortunate. Hunters must only pay a $15 processing fee that can be written off come tax season. More information on how to participate can be found at www.sharedeer.org.
Crashes with Deer Should Not Increase Insurance Premiums
Under Pennsylvania law, crashes involving contact with a deer are considered not-at-fault accidents, and insurance companies cannot add a surcharge to a policyholder’s premium as a result.
Figures compiled by State Farm Insurance show that Pennsylvanians have a 1-in-63 chance of being involved in a deer-related crash. There were more than 4,100 such crashes reported in 2016, resulting in 573 injuries and four fatalities in Pennsylvania. State Farm Insurance reports the average cost of a deer-related collision is nearly $4,200.
