Senator Scavello Joins Colleagues in Support of Senate Bill 22 – Redistricting Reform
I recently joined many citizens and colleagues on the stairs of the Capitol in support of Senate Bill 22, the redistricting reform bill that I am co-sponsoring with Senator Lisa Boscola. This bill is a constitutional amendment that proposes a citizen-led commission tasked with redrawing legislative district boundaries following each decennial census.
While Monroe and Northampton counties specifically made out much better in the most recent round of redistricting, we need to ensure that no area experiences in the future what we did following the 2000 census. Monroe was divided up into six senate districts (now two) and Northampton into four districts (now two).

PA Tax Amnesty Offered Through June 19
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is offering a Tax Amnesty Program, waiving all penalties and cutting in half the interest owed, through June 19, 2017. It is estimated some 862,600 taxpayers are eligible to participate.
Nearly 80 percent of those eligible are Pennsylvanians owing more than $2.1 billion in back taxes, with another 21 percent from out-of-state owing a total of $1.4 billion to the Commonwealth.
The 2010 tax amnesty program, only the second ever offered, generated $254.6 million from nearly 59,500 delinquent taxpayers. Those participating in the 2010 PA Tax Amnesty Program are not eligible for the 2017 program.
Falcon Cam: Harrisburg’s Peregrine Hatchlings are doing well
Over the last few weeks, three of the four viable peregrine falcon eggs hatched, giving each an equal opportunity for sufficient nourishment to grow and successfully fledge from the 15th-floor ledge of the Rachel Carson Building in downtown Harrisburg.
Around the 40th District
Congratulations to those honored at the Salvation Army's Annual Report Dinner this past week. The honorees were the Mattioli Foundation, Harry Lee, Sue Werkeiser, and John Lambert. Thank you for all you do to support the work of the Salvation Army.
This past week I joined Senator Lisa M. Boscola in hosting the Second Annual Northampton County Firemen's Memorial Service, where we joined the community in honoring the service of 12 long-time firefighters who passed away this last year. Their dedication to keeping our communities safe will never be forgotten and we are grateful for their service.
I recently joined PA State Rep. Marcia Hahn and PA State Rep. Joe Emrick in recognizing the grand opening of the new St. Luke's Health Center in Nazareth. Thank you for your commitment to our community and providing for the health needs of the greater Nazareth region.
The Monroe County Beekeepers Association is celebrating their 40th Anniversary this year. Best wishes as you continue in the years ahead!
Thank you to all the letter carriers that participated in the National Association of Letter Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" event, where thousands of pounds of food was collected to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania and many families in the region. This effort is critical to provide for those in need during the summer months, which is often a difficult time for families with children not in school. Thank you for your important work!
